Learn More about Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of New Zealand's most popular hikes. Located in the heart of the North Island, this hike passes between dormant volcanoes and through stunning landscapes of volcanic rock and blue lakes.

This Tongariro National Park hike is by far the most beautiful I have done on my New Zealand road trip.

The first section of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing hike climbs gently for 4.5 kilometres.
There are good views of Mount Ngauruhoe from the start. The trail moves through a lunar landscape of volcanic rock, moss and streams until it reaches a dry toilet. From here the hike becomes significantly more challenging as the trail climbs steeply for about 2 kilometres to a plateau.

Once on the plateau, the most beautiful section of the hike begins at the foot of Mount Ngauruhoe. The trail crosses the plateau in a straight line for 1 kilometre before starting to climb again.

It is at the end of this second ascent that the summit of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is reached at about 1800 metres. This headland offers spectacular views of Tongariro National Park, Mount Ngauruhoe, Red Crater, Mount Tongariro and Lake Taupo.

The trail then descends through steep scree. Take your time to avoid slipping on this section, which is the steepest of the whole walk. The beautiful Emerald Lakes are located on this section. Be careful not to touch the water of these lakes, sacred to the Maoris.

Finally, the trail climbs one last time in a more moderate manner for about 1km to Blue Lake. This marks the halfway point of the hike in terms of distance: 10 kilometres to the start, 10 kilometres to the finish. From here, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing trail descends to the end.

After passing the Blue Lake, the trail descends to the end of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

On the way down, you will enjoy stunning views of Lake Rotoaira and Lake Taupo. If you pay attention to the surrounding slopes, you will also see fumaroles that are evidence of the geothermal activity in this part of New Zealand.

About 2.5 kilometres before the end of the trail, you find vegetation and then the shade of the forest. The last kilometre is a dreadful bore as you find yourself on a dusty track running in a straight line to the car park, where you find your car.
